How We Are Organized - A Tripartite
MDA membership includes membership on three levels: the local component (dental district) society, the American Dental Association, the Mississippi Dental Association and the local component (dental district society). View the Organizational Flow Chart.
American Dental Association
The ADA is the national organization of the tripartite. Founded in 1859, the American Dental Association is the oldest and largest national dental society in the world. Since then, the ADA has grown to become the leading source of oral health related information for dentists and their patients.
The House of Delegates, as the legislative and governing body, is the supreme authority in the American Dental Association. As such, it speaks for the more than 155,000 dentist members of the Association and for the dental profession in the United States. The 464 members of the House of Delegates are chosen by the 53 constituent societies, the five federal dental services and the American Student Dental Association. The House meets once a year, during the Association’s Annual Session usually held in October.
The number of delegates per state society is based on membership totals. In Mississippi, we have 3 delegates and 3 alternates. Each delegate is elected by the MDA General Assembly at a meeting conducted during the MDA Annual Session. Delegates serve three year terms and the terms are staggered. So every year, one of the three delegates is at the completion of a term and must seek re-election. In addition to representation in the ADA House, our delegates serve on the MDA Board of Trustees.
Alternates are the individuals who are serving each year in the following offices: President, President-elect and our Elected Alternate Delegate. The MDA Executive Director also serves on the delegation as a non-voting participant.
Mississippi Dental Association
The MDA, founded in 1875, is a state constituent society of the American Dental Association. Mississippi is in the Fifth District of the ADA, along with Alabama and Georgia. The MDA is governed by a General Assembly and a Board of Trustees.
Local Component Societies - Dental Districts
The MDA is composed of six Component Societies (Dental Districts); each has its own officers and an elected Trustee who serves on the MDA Board.
