Membership Value It is ALL About Our Members

Why should I be a member of the MDA? What has the MDA ever done for me? Those are questions we are posed regularly and rightfully so. An organization that is formed by members to serve members should be able to easily answer those questions.

ADA Delegation

The House of Delegates, as the legislative and governing body, is the supreme authority in the American Dental Association. As such, it speaks for the more than 155,000 dentist members of the Association and for the dental profession in the United States. The 464 members of the House of Delegates are chosen by the 53 constituent societies, the five federal dental services and the American Student Dental Association. The House meets once a year, during the Association’s Annual Session usually held in October.

The number of delegates per state society is based on membership totals. In Mississippi, we have 3 delegates and 3 alternates. Each delegate is elected by the MDA General Assembly at a meeting conducted during the MDA Annual Session. Delegates serve three year terms and the terms are staggered. So every year, one of the three delegates is at the completion of a term and must seek re-election. In addition to representation in the ADA House, our delegates serve on the MDA Board of Trsutees.

Alternates are the individuals who are serving each year in the following offices: President, President-elect and our Elected Alternate Delegate.

The MDA Executive Director also serves on the delegation as a non-voting participant.
