Dr. Ron Kaminer is a 1990 graduate from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine. He maintains two practices, one in Hewlett, NY and one in Oceanside, NY. Dr Kaminer is an international expert in the field of dental lasers and has lectured on lasers and minimally invasive dentistry nationally and internationally. He is Director of the Masters of Laser training program in New York, and is a clinical consultant and lecturer for numerous companies, including, , GC America, AMD Lasers ,SDI, Camsight, Nu Calm and Smile Reminder. Dr. Kaminer maintains a teaching appointment at Peninsula General Hospital in Far Rockaway, NY. He is also a clinical instructor with the International College of Laser Education. He has authored numerous articles on dental lasers and minimally invasive dentistry He is on the editorial board of Dental Product Shopper and a member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, Academy of General Dentistry, International College of Facial Esthetic, and American Dental Association. He lives in Hewlett, NY with his wife Jackie and three children, Josh, Erika and Matt.

A newer member of the ADA team, Jenn brings expertise from the corporate world, where she most recently led communications and PR for Levy Restaurants.
Jenn also served as vice president of digital strategy at Edelman for several years, crafting digital and social media programs for Fortune 500 companies. In her spare time, Jenn can be found kayaking in Lake Michigan, cooking, or taking long strolls with her greyhounds.

Dr. Alex Touchstone grew up in Laurel, Mississippi and has been a dentist for over 20 years. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1990 with a degree in biology, and received his DDS from the College of Dentistry at the University of Tennessee in 1994. For most of his career, Dr. Touchstone has operated a private practice serving Hattiesburg and has developed a reputation as one of the world’s leading experts on advanced computer-enabled digital dental technology.
Over the past 20 years, computer-enabled technologies have revolutionized dental care, and Dr. Touchstone has been instrumental in their development and use. He was an early adopter of Computer Aided Design (CAD/CAM) in dentistry, and he holds several patents for advances he has made in the production of replacement teeth with CAD/CAM technologies.
In addition to operating his dental practice, Dr. Touchstone serves on the Clinical Advisory Board for Natural Dental Implants AG. He also serves at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in the Postgraduate Prosthodontics Division as an Adjunct Assistant Professor. He is a popular lecturer on digital dentistry, and he has delivered talks and workshops to audiences around the world. He has written many articles and produced several videos on digital dentistry for the dental community. He is also the author and administrator of LearnDigitalDentistry.com, an interactive web portal and forum for the dental community.
Dr. Touchstone lives in Hattiesburg with his wife and two sons.

Dr. Julie Goldberg is the Dental Education Coordinator at OMSNIC and Fortress. Julie received her dental degree from the University of Illinois and is a licensed dentist in both Illinois and Florida. She is a Chicago area native who has been in private practice in Illinois as well as in the Ft. Lauderdale, FL area, and currently maintains membership with the ADA as well as the Chicago Dental Society. Julie brings her clinical dental experience and knowledge to the Patient Safety and Risk Management Department.
Mr. Robert St. John and Mr. Wyatt Waters
Restaurateur, chef and author Robert St. John and watercolorist Wyatt Waters, commentators and chroniclers of Mississippi culture, will provide our keynote address. During their presentation Mr. Waters will create a water color painting that will later hang in the MDA office and they will be on hand to sign copies of their cookbooks.
143rd General Business Session of the Mississippi Dental Association
Our MDA General Business Session is scheduled in the Salon FGH. This annual meeting provides you with a great opportunity to participate in the business of your state association.
Attendees will hear a recap of the highlights of the events that have taken place during the 2017-2018 year from current MDA President, Dr. Joe Burns.
2018-2019 MDA Officer Elections
Second Vice President, ADA Delegate and Secretary/Treasurer elections will be conducted. This session will be facilitated by MDA Speaker, Dr. Fanasy Jefcoat.
Dr. Sherry Gwin will address the Assembly as she is installed as the 143rd president of the Mississippi Dental Association.

Opioid Use and Abuse
Dr. Pamela Sims
Opioid analgesics are important analgesics needed to control pain in dental patients. Abuse of prescribed opioid analgesics has become an important issue with regard to what is being called the opioid epidemic in our country. It is important for the dental team to understand the relationship of prescribed opioids and the potential for abuse and dependence in patients. It is also important for the dental team to understand how to care for a patient who is recovering from opioid drug abuse or addiction. The dental team must also be aware of and able to detect patients who may be seeking drugs for abuse or misuse.
Dr. Sims will review the common opioids and associated drugs of abuse and those drugs’ effects on oral health and dental treatment. She will provide guidance for treating patients who are current drug users and those who are recovering from drug abuse.
At the conclusion of this program the participant will be able to:
Understand the patterns of opioid and associated drug abuse.
Understand important considerations for the dental treatment of a drug abuser.
Understand important consideration for the dental care of a recovering drug abuser.
Recognize the methods used to screen for drugs of abuse.
Recognize important components of reliable drug testing.
Pamela Sims, recently retired as Professor of Pharmacokinetics in the Department of Pharmaceutical, Social and Administrative Sciences at Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy (SUMSOP). Dr. Sims earned her B.S. Pharmacy from the University of Florida, her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Mercer University and her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Colorado at Boulder (CU). Prior to Samford, she served on the faculty of Idaho State University (ISU).
Dr. Sims holds a faculty appointment in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry Department of Pediatrics. She provides courses and lectures in Pharmacology to the Post-doctoral Dental Residents and a Part II Board Review in Pharmacology to fourth year Dental students. Dr. Sims also coordinates and teaches in a pharmacology course for the Nurse Anesthesia program at Samford University.
Dr. Sims publishes and lectures nationally and internationally concerning topics on Dental Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacokinetics, Clinical Pharmacology and Pedagogy.
